About
Us
We
began in 1980 as a community-based informal science program in Montgomery
County, Maryland.
In
1982 Hands On Science came under the auspices of the Montgomery
County Council of Parent Teacher Association's nonprofit corporation,
Education Programs, Inc. (EPI). Parents in this large countywide
school system were eager to make science enrichment equally
available to all of its elementary school population. EPI
was itself developed by the county's parent-teacher support
group to offer afterschool foreign language classes and then
expanded to include other enrichment activities as well as
Hands On Science.

The
Hands On Science Outreach (HOSO) nonprofit corporation was
formed in 1984 to respond to program requests outside of Montgomery
County, MD.
In
1985 The National Science Foundation awarded HOSO a grant
to test the viability of the program in other communities.
During the grant period, HOSO developed its first "training
of trainers" model, its manuals, and its monitoring and
evaluation tools.

Today,
Hands On Science continues to provide afterschool programs in Maryland
and is also found in more than 33 other states, South America, Europe
and Asia.
