THE
EARLY SCIENCE PROGRAM |
The
Early Science Program is designed as a half-day program for
children entering kindergarten and first grade. Each series
is prepared for daily two week sessions (30 hours of programming)
on the following 3 topics. The class size is a maximum of
15 children guided by a HOSO trained Adult Leader and a teen
assistant.
All
About Me
Children
experience through movement, games, music and specific
science activities how the parts and systems of their
body "machines" work together.
My
Environment
A
number of environmental themes in the areas of botany,
geology, zoology, day time astronomy and hydrology are
presented.
My
World, Past and Present
Dinosaurs
capture the imagination of the children as they learn
relative sizes of these creatures. Children simulate
fossils. They investigate the interaction of soil, plants,
animals and water as they change over time.

SUMMER
SCIENCE ADVENTURES |
The
Summer Science Adventures Program for children entering 2nd,
3rd or 4th, 5th and 6th grades is available in 2 formats.
There are 2 half-day programs featuring 2 topics each (30
hours of programming) or a full-day program that includes
all 4 topics (60 hours of programming.) Each series is packaged
for 15 children and is guided by a HOSO trained Adult Leader
and teen assistant.

Waterworks |
Can
you think of a better reason to play in and around the
water than to explore a local stream or creek? Children
compare temperature differences in the creek area, check
out the geology along the creek bed and follow the flow
of the stream with popped corn. |
Under
Foot |
Take
a closer look at what is around in the ground. Find
out why some things grow best in certain soils. Children
get up close and personal with their own worm farm;
see how worms are affected by noise and light and calculate
their movements and speed.

In
The Air |
Children
use binoculars to compare the flight of birds with the
technology of airplanes. They find out why a boomerang
comes back to them and why a paper helicopter spirals
downward.
|
Ecology
And Me |
How
much impact can children have on their own world? They
look at ways to solve some of the ecological problems
of their environment.

The
Green Scene |
Children
will do minor plant "surgery", measure plant
breathing, create a mini-environment and mix art and
science into some surprising results.
|
Up,
Up, And Away |
Children
will have high flying fun with kits, planes, balloons,
and a UFO. They experiment with construction, balance,
wind patterns, models and their own inventions.

The
Good Earth |
Children
peek into the world of environmental changes to find the
resources of their natural home and how to use them. They
will create their very own "rot" chamber, solar
still, land fill and oil spill. |
Energy
|
Children
take advantage of the summer sun to look at the power
in a solar panel and a solar water heater. They find the
"energy" in moving toys and put wind and water
power to work. |
